Obsidian is a black volcanic glass formed from rapidly cooling lava. The obsidian, or lapilli, used here came from the Cumbre Vieja volcano, which erupted in the Canary Islands. It is an extremely brittle and abrasive igneous rock, making it difficult to work. It has a very dark and intense colour, typical of translucent crystals.
